Spring Wine Tasting

At Saddles we sure love a glass of wine (or two!). We’re particularly proud that we source only Australian wines to share with our guests. In our final weeks at home, our assistant manager and wine extraordinaire, Elle has put together some tasting notes for three of her favourite drops that regularly feature on the Saddles wine list.

2021 Lucetta Roux Pinot Gris (Murray Darling, NSW)

A Saddles classic, this beautiful wine is a firm favourite of the team. It’s made by ‘From Sunday Wines’, a collective of like-minded people in the wine industry who share similar philosophies on natural winemaking – ‘we use science to try and understand nature, not control it.’

Taste notes: this wine is fresh and zesty with flavours of green apple, pear, lemon and lime. It also has a long lingering finish, perfect to have on its own but pairs beautifully with food.

Paired with: rich, flavoursome soft cheeses. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon in the sunshine.

Purchase from: our friends at Upstairs Wine – purchase a bottle online.

2020 Medhurst Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley, VIC)

This Pinot Noir is a lovely example of the Yarra Valley’s cool-climate Pinot Noirs. It’s a blend of handpicked Medhurst Estate fruit and a single neighbouring vineyard with 30-year-old vines.

Taste notes: this perfumed Pinot Noir has floral aromas of mint and subtle flavours of bright red cherries, boysenberries and five-spice.

Paired with: this energetic and low tannin wine pairs perfectly with roast lamb or for a vegetarian option, grilled shiitake mushrooms.

Purchase from: Whilst we order from our friends at Saint Wines. You can also jump online and purchase a bottle from Sometimes Always.

2019 Sigurd Red Blend (Barossa Valley, SA)

This wine is a unique blend made up predominantly of Carignan, supported by Syrah and Malbec with a pinch of Grenache, spending 15 months in oak barrels adding layers of cinnamon and clove.

Dan Graham is a young and passionate winemaker who has worked for large wineries in the Barossa Valley and worked as a wine judge, now he makes his own wines, sourcing premium fruit from multiple parcels in the Barossa Valley. All of Sigurd’s wines are minimal intervention and in his words, ‘handpicked, naturally fermented, matured in oak, and always made with passion’.

Taste notes: this wine is vibrant, full-bodied, easy drinking with flavours of blackberries & cherries, spice and all things nice.

Paired with: You can’t go wrong with a glass of this with a hearty, meat-filled pie. For our vegetarians, a rich, roast pumpkin dish.

Purchase from: Whilst we source this delicious red blend from Lo-Fi, why not stock up on a case for yourself? Purchase online from The Wine Collective.

We’re ready and waiting

It’s still go, go, go for team Saddles. And, whilst we can’t welcome anyone at the moment, we’re working hard behind the scenes. We’ve been preparing menus, researching new beverage additions and sourcing amazing local produce to get ready. We look forward to welcoming you back to Saddles on November 1.
